[Comment: Four helpful classes, each 15 minutes long, on the do's & don'ts of positive communication. It is a good idea in video classes to take a break between each class, as a video usually has a lot of information packed in, more than one can absorb in one sitting.]

[Comment: This is a class on how to prepare a speech. It would be useful, too, for those preparing to give seminars.]
Take Away Your Blues -- Tap Dancing (video, 45 minutes)
[Comment: Easy to follow class on tap dancing. Taught step by step in a series of lessons, the grand finale is putting it all together and tap dancing to a whole song. Fun for all ages!]
Steppin' Out -- Ballroom Dancing for Beginners (video, 57 minutes)

CHRISTIAN LIGHT EDUCATION
MUS CLE-01 Music I
Course Contents: (CLE Music Books 1 through 8) [Comment: This program teaches about reading music, with some emphasis on reading shaped notes that are used in singing and printed in some songbooks. Covers the basic facts involved in reading music, but would likely need a music teacher to help the student progress. Some materials covered may not be so needed or interesting to those outside traditional Mennonite communities.]

Yamaha Electronic Keyboard (video, 55 minutes)
[Comment: Overview and introduction to electronic keyboards. This differs from a normal piano in that it covers the use of various functions -- drums, chords, etc. Comes with booklet.]
Anyone Can Play Harmonica (video, 40 minutes)

COMPUTER PROGRAMS

Numerous computer programs for learning to read and play music are available commercially. Some are tutorial programs that come with a special keyboard which plugs into a music card in a computer. These programs present lessons to students, correcting, evaluating and commenting on their progress as they learn to play and read music.

[Comment: This program provides a complete beginners piano course with hundreds of lessons. Students with no previous knowledge of music can complete the course in 6 to 12 months, during which time they will learn to read musical notation, play with two hands, use chords, learn new pieces of music on their own, learn how to perform with other musicians.
To use this computer piano teaching system you would need a Miracle Piano, or MIDI compatible keyboard with at least 49 keys (full size are best), capable of 16 note polyphony as well as multi-timbrel (up to 8 timbrels), plus any Windows-supported MIDI adapter with MIDI cables, etc., a 386 or 486 or better processor, DOS 5.0 or higher, Windows 3.1 or higher, at least 4 MB of RAM, hard drive with at least 5 MB of free space, SVGA video adapter (640x480 256 color) and color monitor, a high density floppy drive, available serial port or any Windows-supported MIDI port, and a mouse.]

STUDY COURSES
CHRISTIAN LIGHT EDUCATION
Christian Light offers a structured art program which some Family members have liked. It can be ordered through the Family distributor on its own without having to take other CLE courses. Art 1 Lifepacs are suitable for high school art study, but may need supplementary reference material for students wanting more in-depth study. (Note: Do not confuse these Art 1 Lifepacs with Artpac1 -- Art with a Purpose from the same company, which is an art series for young children.)
ART CLE-01 Art I
Course Content: (CLE Art 1 Lifepac 1-10). Art 1 Lifepacs include studies in fine art, commercial art, and art appreciation. There are ten Lifepacs available which instruct students on various art skills and provide art projects to form an individualized art application course. The units are as follows:
Art 1 Lifepac 1 Fundamentals of Art: Covers elements of art such as line, value, shape, texture, and color; plus the theory of color (color science, properties, harmonies, and effects).
Art 1 Lifepac 2 Fundamentals of Design: Covers the principles of design including rhythm, dominance, balance, proportion, unity, color; plus provides some abstract design projects, stylized design, and design arrangements.
Art 1 Lifepac 3 Fundamentals of Drawing: Provides an introduction to drawing, simple approaches to drawing, the use of value and depth in drawing, and drawing applications in figure, portrait and outdoor sketching.
Art 1 Lifepac 4 Figure Drawing: Covers basic elements and fundamentals of figure drawing, studies of figure differences (age, gender, character, position), as well as making figure compositions involving action, emphasis, and mood.
Art 1 Lifepac 5 Crafts: Touches on paper craft, macram and assorted crafts.
Art 1 Lifepac 6 Three-dimensional Design: Deals with construction with attention to form and shape, string sculpture, assemblage, mobiles; also covers modeling and carving.
Art 1 Lifepac 7 Commercial Art: Covers lettering (terminology, Gothic, Roman, Italic, Script, Old English); layout and illustration (techniques, cartooning).
Art 1 Lifepac 8 Applied Art: Covers textile design (weaving, stitchery); photography (process, product); printmaking (simple blocks, stencils, monoprints).
Art 1 Lifepac 9 Painting: Covers tempera painting (color theory, color mixing and blending, painting techniques, different textures, composition); matting (process, exhibit and critique); watercolor painting (color mixing, techniques, textures, still life painting, flower painting, landscape painting).
Art 1 Lifepac 10 Art Appreciation: Covers picture study, sculpture, architecture, applied art.
Credits: 4 (for all units, or 0.5 credit for each unit up to 4 credits.)

Flatbrush Writing with Fran Strom (video, 75 minutes)
[Comment: This video teaches calligraphy with a brush -- Roman capitals and full serifs. New calligraphers get a sound base of structure and form, and experienced calligraphers review and learn new techniques.]
Pen Calligraphy (video, 88 minutes)
[Comment: This is a worthwhile and thorough class for anyone wanting to learn fancy lettering with a pen.]
Learn to Paint Oils (video, 88 minutes)
[Comment: This is a basic oil painting class for those interested in learning to paint with oils.]
Painting with Watercolors (video, 60 minutes)
[Comment: This video shows the basics of watercoloring, starting from scratch.]
COMPUTER PROGRAMS

There are various art programs available on the market. Some teach art techniques while others are computer programs used to generate computer art and graphics. CorelDraw, for example, is a sophisticated and expensive computer graphics program and Corel PhotoPaint or Adobe Photoshop are advanced digital art programs. Students who master CorelDraw or Adobe Photoshop may apply up to 4 credits toward their Art Certificate requirements. Numerous reference books are available commercially that provide good instruction in the use of CorelDraw. Students should try and obtain the latest version possible (version 6.0, for Windows 95, is available as of this writing) and secure the use of a suitable computer and color monitor to work with this program.
There are also numerous other much less expensive programs that operate under Windows available on the market today that do a very nice job of creating graphics suitable for most uses, e.g., Windows Draw 4.0, Paintbrush, etc.
