Students may need to supplement some of the following with course material listed in "Appendix B: Supplementary Courses and Resources." Some courses have a "JH" code in the course number. These are no-credit junior high level courses that may be taken if the student requires further study before taking the CVC Junior High examinations. See page 1.ACD.8 for further explanation.
1. LANGUAGE ARTS (ENG) (8 credits required)
A. Reading and Writing (RD)
ENG RD-01HS Reading and Study Skills
Course Description: This course covers speed reading and study skills. Students study various reading techniques and approaches to quickly gaining information from various printed sources, while learning to skim read, improve their vocabularies, increase their reading comprehension, etc.

ENG RD-02HS Vocabulary Building
Course Description: Improves the students' ability to communicate and better understand what they read through increasing their vocabulary. The course includes a survey of Anglo-Saxon, Latin and Greek prefixes, suffixes, and stems.

ENG RD-03HS Research and Essay Writing
Course Description: Students study how to use indexes and study helps, do research, and write papers. Students are required to write three essays of at least 1,500 words each.

B. English Grammar (EG)
ENG EG-01JH English Grammar and Punctuation I
(This course is available if the student needs extra study before taking the CVC Junior High Language Arts Exam.)
Course Description: Covers parts of speech, sentence structure, word order, common mistakes, punctuation, use of capital letters, etc.
ENG EG-02HS English Grammar and Punctuation II
Course Description: Participles, parallel sentence structure, pronouns, possessives and plurals, specialized punctuation, case form, words often confused, run-on sentences, hyphenation and word division, capitalization, etc.

C. Spelling (SP)
ENG SP-01HS Spelling
Course Description: Commonly misspelled words, British and American Spellings, foreign words and phrases; Anglo-Saxon, Latin and Greek prefixes, suffixes and stems; how to improve your spelling, rules for spelling, homonyms, heteronyms, abbreviations, gender, special terms for fields of study, etc.

D. Poetry (PT)
ENG PT-01HS Poetry
Course Description: An anthology of contemporary and classical inspirational poetry for all ages. Students study the basics of writing poetry and write three poems of their own on topics of interest to them.

E. Literature (LT)
ENG LT-01HS Classic Literature Appreciation
Course Description: With the assistance of videos such as: Silas Marner, Les Miserables, The Man in the Iron Mask, The Agony and The Ecstasy, Ben Hur, Quo Vadis, A Tale of Two Cities, A Christmas Carol, The Robe, Lost Horizon, The Man of La Mancha (Don Quixote), Keys of the Kingdom, etc. students become familiar with at least five pieces of classic literature and write a brief summary of each, including author and date written.

2. MATHEMATICS (MAT) (8 credits required)
MAT MA-01JH Mathematics I
(This course is available if the student needs extra study before taking the CVC Junior High Mathematics Exam.)
Course Description: Basic math review of common and useful facts, vocabulary and procedures, including reading large numbers, rounding off numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimal fractions, ratios, percentages, squaring a number, square roots. Simple Geometry, arcs and angles, geometric figures, geometric solids, etc. Measurements (linear, area, volume, weight, temperature), metric conversions, time zones, basic algebra, graphs.
MAT MA-02HS Consumer Math
Course Description: This course is based on the CLE Consumer Math Lightunits 1-10. These study units cover: basic math skills review with consumer applications, income, taxes, budgets, purchasing, insurance, banking, financial planning and transactions, date interpretations, math in service occupations, transportation and travel, currency, financial records, credit, business operations, geometry. (Any suitable applied math program, CD, textbook, or workbooks with similar course content can be substituted for the CLE course.)

MAT MA-03HS Algebra I
Course Description: This course is based on the CLE 900-910 math studies series of Lightunits that form an introductory algebra course. These study units cover: variables and numbers, how to solve equations, word problems using algebra, polynomials, factoring, algebraic fractions, radical expressions, graphing, quadratic equations, etc. (Any suitable introductory algebra program, CD, textbook, or workbooks with similar course content can be substituted for the CLE course.)

MAT MA-04HS Geometry
Course Description: This course is based on the CLE 1001-1010 math studies series of Lightunits covering high school geometry. Students study geometric statements and proofs, angle relationships and parallels, congruent triangles and quadrilaterals, polygons, circles and spheres, tangents, arcs, and chords, basic construction and locus, area and volume, coordinate geometry. (Any suitable geometry program, CD, textbook, or workbooks with similar course content can be substituted for the CLE course.)

Course Description: Study topics include: Air, Water, Heat, Solar System, Magnetism, Measuring, Gravity, Sound, Weather and Climate, The Water Cycle, Rocks and Soil, Machines, Matter, Atoms and Molecules, Oxygen, Energy, Electricity, Space and Stars, Light, Lenses, Inventions, Fuels, Pollution, The Earth.
SCI SC-02HS Creation Science
Course Description: Explores facts supporting Biblical creation as opposed to the theory of evolution.

SCI SC-03HS Our Wonderful Body
Course Description: A basic course in anatomy and organ systems and how they function.

SCI SC-04HS Chemistry I
Course Description: This is a general science and chemistry introductory course based on selected CLE science Lightunits. Topics covered include: Science in our Lives, Molecular Genetics, Chemical Structure and Change, Properties of Matter, Changing Matter, Our Atomic World, Estimates and Measurement, Elements, Compounds and Mixtures. (Any suitable introductory chemistry program, CD, textbook, or workbooks with similar course content can be substituted for the CLE course.)

SCI SC-05HS Physics I
Course Description: This is a general science and physics introductory course based on selected CLE science Lightunits. Topics covered include: Light and Sound, Motion and Movement, Energy, Magnets and Electricity, Using Machines, Levers, Pulleys and Gears, Science and Technology, Volume, Mass, and Density. (Any suitable introductory physics program, CD, textbook, or workbooks with similar course content can be substituted for the CLE course.)

SOC WH-02JH World History II
(This course is available if the student needs extra study before taking the CVC Junior High Social Studies Exam.)
Course Description: Covers topics like: The Medo-Persian Empire, The Grecian Empire, The Roman Empire, The Dark Ages.
SOC WH-03JH World History III
(This course is available if the student needs extra study before taking the CVC Junior High Social Studies Exam.)
Course Description: Covers topics like: The Great Awakening, New Worlds, Napoleon, The British Empire, The Modern Age, The Russian Revolution, World Wars I and II, The Great Depression, The Jewish State, A World Divided, Europe Unites, Gulf War, Rise of a New World Order.
SOC BI-01HS Biographies of Famous People
Course Description: Students become familiar with the life and work of famous men and women, both religious and secular. Students must make a close study of one man or woman's life and write a 1500-word essay about some aspect of that person's life that personally interests them.

B. Current Events, Economics and World Problems (CE)
SOC CE-01HS Current Events
Course Description: Students read and discuss major news events and leadership personalities of our modern time. The aim of the course is to encourage students to be well informed about major world issues, problems and landmark events throughout the years.

SOC CE-02HS World Problems and God's Solutions
Course Description: A Christian perspective on world problems today. A contemporary comparative analysis of world events and problems. These include environmental changes, earthquakes and natural disasters, plus major political and economic events of our time.

SOC CE-03HS Our Changing World
Course Description: A look at the physical, political, economic and ideological forces that help shape the world we live in.

SOC EC-01HS Economics
Course Description: An overview course exploring the "haves" and "have-nots," how economic disparities came to be, and possible solutions as explained by the Word of God.

C. Geography and Travel Experience (GE)
SOC GE-00HS Travel Experience
Course Description: Course credits will be granted for travel experience to students who have lived abroad and have extensive travel and inter-cultural experience. Students must write up a summary of their travels, places visited and inter-cultural experiences to qualify for credits. Their travel record can be substantiated by plane ticket stubs, passport stamps, letters received abroad, photos, letters of recommendation, etc. Students should put their completed travel record in their CVC portfolio.

SOC GE-01HS World Geography I
Course Description: Study topics include: People, politics and economics, world climates, racial origins, maps, longitude, latitude, topographic maps, forces that change the earth, the water cycle, ocean currents, land and water forms, the earth's crust, etc.

SOC GE-02HS World Geography II
Course Description: Study topics include: Human geography, clothing, houses of various peoples of the world. The course includes a summary look at Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Oceania, Europe, North America, South America, and helps familiarize students with geographic terms.

SOC GE-03HS Traveling and Living Abroad
Course Description: A practical course on how to live and travel in other cultures. This course is especially geared for students who are planning to work and study abroad.

SOC GE-04HS Travel Through the Asia Pacific Region
Course Description: Students with opportunity to travel through this part of the world study the cultural, economic and political climate of these countries.
Credits: 2
SOC GE-05HS Travel Through Latin America
Course Description: Students traveling through Latin American countries study the cultures, economies and political structure of the countries they visit.
Credits: 2
SOC GE-06HS Travel Through the Indian Subcontinent
Course Description: Students with opportunity to visit this unique part of the world study the different cultures, religions, economies and political processes of this area.

SOC GE-07HS Travel Through Europe
Course Description: Students traveling throughout the countries of Europe study the various cultures, and the economic and political structures found there.

SOC GE-08HS Travel Through Eastern Europe
Course Description: In this course students with the opportunity to visit this changing part of the world study the various cultures, economic and political processes, as well as the difficulties currently being faced in this region.

Course Description: Students traveling in Africa study its varied political, economic, and cultural differences.

Course Description: Etiquette, grooming, health and personal matters of interest to young women.

Course Description: Manners, grooming and personal health and conduct details of interest to young men.

HPD PD-03HS General Health & Development Matters
Course Description: General course on matters of health and development for young people.

HPD PD-04HS Personal Adjustment, Marriage and Family
Course Description: Selected studies on personal adjustment, attitudes about sex, marriage and having a family. Supervisors assign appropriate reading material according to the personal needs and interests of each student.

HPD PD-05HS Weight Management
Course Description: A practical course on weight management through balanced diet and daily exercise. Students learn a popular and successful common sense approach to diet and exercise for "maxis" and "minis."

PE-01HS Swimming
Course Description: Skills covered include: drown-proofing, skill tests, basic swim strokes, swimming safety. Students must demonstrate proficiency in swimming and know life-saving techniques to be granted credit for this course.

PE-02HS Recreational Games and Activities I
Course Description: A first year high school physical education program for boys and girls covering basic physical exercises and team sport skills.

PE-03HS Recreational Games and Activities II
Course Description: A second year high school physical education program for boys and girls covering more advanced physical exercises and team sport skills.
Credits: 2
PE-04HS Recreational Games and Activities III
Course Description: Stresses the importance of exercise, and provides the student with instruction in a number of specific recreational sports and activities including: bowling, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, badminton, table tennis, tennis, volleyball, baseball, etc.
