Note: This Movie Guide contains all movies rated "watchable" or "not recommended" to-date, and includes the titles from Revised Movie Lists 1-4 as well as those included in past FUNs. So this is the only list youll need to keep and refer to. All titles that are new to this list (not previously published in lists 1-4) are underlined for easy reference.

God bless you! We love you and pray that the Revised Movie Lists which you have been receiving have been a help in selecting movies for your Homes viewing pleasure.
Movie viewing and the Charter
As you know, with the advent of the Charter, the guidelines for movie viewing have been revised. Although it is recommended that you select movies to view from the WS movie lists, it is not a hard and fast rule that you must do so. You also have the liberty to show movies, or portions of movies, to audiences younger than the recommended age group, providing you have previewed the movie and counseled about its suitability with a responsible adult. With smaller Homes, you may find that the few children/teens in your Home of a certain age bracket are mature enough to view a movie intended for an older audience, and this is now left up to your prayerful discretion.
For this reason, were changing the name of this publication from the "Revised Movie List" to "The Family Movie Guide." The recommendations made in this list are guidelines to help you find movies that will hopefully make your video-viewing times worthwhile and positive. Lord willing, we plan to put out one such guide per year, which will contain all rated movies to-date. Between Movie Guides we will also try to include ratings for some new releases in the FUN.
Wed like to clarify that the movies which are included in this Movie Guide, as well as in past Revised Movie Lists are not "recommended" in the sense that we recommend that you watch them or feel that you should watch them. They are movies which we have previewed and felt that they are "watchable," meaning generally okay for viewing. However, this does not mean that all of these movies will be liked by everyone in your Home, nor does it mean that all of these movies will have a good effect on every single person who views them.
While the majority of those who previewed or rewatched the movies listed deemed them watchable, in some cases some didnt like them or felt they werent worth watching. Generally speaking, there are few movies that everyone likes and feels are worthwhile, because opinions on movies are very subjective. Therefore, we have to base our ratings on a two-thirds majority of those who preview them. So please dont expect every movie listed here to be a hit, or completely free of negative influences and lesson-filled from beginning to end!
The responsibility of movie viewing
There are many different kinds of movies listed in this Movie Guide. Some are serious movies with lots of lessons to be learned from them; some are "traumatic testimonies"; some provide a useful and interesting insight into a certain segment of todays society or peoples lives; some are based on historical facts and help give a better understanding of important past events.
Other movies are purely entertaining, and although they dont have any great spiritual value, we felt they were generally harmless and fine to watch on occasions when you just want to relax and have a break. As Dad said in "Movie Guidelines," "It all depends on your personality and your mood! Some people wouldnt approve of some of the movies I watch at all. Theyre so super-serious and take themselves so seriously they can hardly think that laughing is very deeply spiritual!--And they cant even laugh at themselves, theyre so super-sober! A lot depends on what you want and can take!--Whether you want something light, to just keep you awake a little longer when youre too tired to work, or whether youre in the mood for something deep and moving and heavy that teaches lessons and that has a real message about something serious" (DB9, ML#2451:9,4).
Of course theres a balance, and we dont want to promote foolishness or silliness, but it does help to remember that we shouldnt be afraid of relaxing and enjoying ourselves or having a fun time together on video night.--Thats what its for!
However, in all movies, whether they be "entertaining," or lesson-filled or thought-provoking, there is always some good and some bad. Since movies are produced by the System, nearly every movie has negative aspects of some kind or another. So if youre going to watch movies at all, you cant escape some exposure to the negative.
Therefore, movie viewing comes with a price: the responsibility to "choose the good and eschew the evil." The responsibility of how much good or bad is retained from a movie is up to each individual. The decision to avoid assimilating the negative aspects of a movie--whether it be a purely entertaining movie or not--is one that each person must make during and after their movie viewing. A movie that has a positive effect on one person could result in lasting negative effects on another if they leave themselves wide open to the wrong influences.
As an example, lets take the movie Cool Runnings (in this Movie Guide, page 8). There are a number of ways that viewers can take this movie: They can just sit back and enjoy the comic side of it and the interesting plot and just relax and have a good time and not necessarily get much out of it--good or bad. Or, maybe at that time in their life the Lord is speaking to them about working more as a team with others, so they tune in to the movies lessons on teamwork and perseverance and apply them to their own life. Or, if they have their guard down and are not in a prayerful spirit, they could pick up on the foolish antics and Jamaican slang, and start emulating that type of negative behavior and language in their interaction with others. Its up to each of us to choose which approach we take when watching any movie, to react to it maturely and to eschew the negative influences.
Of course were all different, and one mans meat may be another mans poison. Some people have found it best to avoid certain types of movies that they know are likely to result in a negative reaction for them personally--whether it be melancholy, foolishness, anger, etc.--even though that same type of movie may be just fine for most everyone else in the Home. For example, very romantic movies can make some people feel lonely; very tense or violent ones make some people very uncomfortable; character studies can be too boring for some. So please dont feel like you personally need to watch every movie in the Family Movie Guide, or that watching a certain movie is going to be a wonderful experience just because its listed here. A lot depends on you, how you are usually affected by that type of movie, and also your attitude and mood at the time of viewing.
As was mentioned in the introduction to the Revised Movie List 4, we are not recommending that everyone in your Home watch all the movies listed under the designated categories for their age group. This is just a list of possibilities for you to consider and choose from. If you are uncertain as to whether a particular movie will be suitable for a certain age group, especially younger audiences, its a good idea to preview it first with your audience in mind. If after previewing it, you do not feel the movie is suitable for those of a certain age group in your Home, then try another.--Or instead of watching a movie, try another fun united activity!
Pow-wowing movies
In the case of younger audiences, although they also bear some responsibility for how they react to certain movies and what they retain from them, the main responsibility rests with the parent, teacher or shepherd who has previewed the movie and is watching it with them. The parent or teacher who is watching a movie with a group of teens or children can have a great deal of influence on how the movie is taken and the lasting effect that it has, whether good or bad.
This brings us to our next point, that of pow-wowing movies. From what weve heard, it seems that in a number of Homes, movies are not usually pow-wowed or discussed, even though this is recommended. At the same time, many teens have gotten "turned off" to pow-wowing movies because of it possibly being overdone by some well-meaning adults. Teens will most likely feel their intelligence is being insulted if the movie is paused every 10 minutes to ask if they understand whats going on or retell what just took place.--So its important to let the pow-wow be their discussion as much as possible, simply prayerfully guided and directed by the shepherd or moderator.
Actually, pow-wowing movies is not just for our young people! Some good "adult-only" movies are quite controversial, such as The Remains of the Day, The Man Without a Face or Alive!, and discussing them together can help everyone come away with a good perspective on the movies message and worthwhile lessons. Of course, not every movie has profound lessons in it, and some are just plain fun and entertainment, but nevertheless, you may find that a brief discussion can be helpful and enjoyable after adults view a movie as well!
Pow-wowing, particularly with teens or younger audiences, does not necessarily mean re-explaining the movie plot, which most teens can easily grasp (unless it is difficult to understand, such as in the case of Henry V, for example). Neither should it be a case of an adult giving a long monologue of his/her thoughts on the movie. An interesting pow-wow can be an informal discussion after the movie, in which all the viewers have a chance to participate, ask questions, and discuss the interesting points or lessons that they saw in the movie, as well as pray against the negative influences which they wouldnt want to pick up on.
Some movies also provide excellent springboards for further discussion and explanation on topics related to the movie, which can, for example, turn into--or later lead to--an interesting history or social studies class for the teens (or JETTs or children). An example of this is In the Name of the Father, which could turn into a very interesting class/discussion on life among the hippies in the early 70s and their relationship with their parents; the IRAs terrorist campaign in England and Northern Ireland; how to survive in prison, etc. Of course, for successful pow-wows, the adults watching the movie with the teens should have previewed it beforehand, to be aware of the subject matter, and have time to pray and reflect on it and even do a little research or "homework" if possible, in order to help the viewers get the most out of the movie.
The reason were making such a point about pow-wowing, particularly movies for teens (and of course, JETTs and children), is because a number of the movies rated as watchable are of a very serious nature and deal with very heavy topics, and we would not deem them suitable for teens if they werent discussed afterwards. (South Central is an example.) We are including these movies in the Movie Guide with the expectation that they will be appropriately discussed.
Of course, as we mentioned above, not every movie is full of lessons and discussion points. Some are purely entertainment, and you shouldnt try to over-spiritualize these types of movies or turn them into a class. But a brief informal discussion at the end of the film would still help.
Its also important when watching any movie, regardless of the audience, to pray together both before (for protection, to be in a good attitude, and that it will be enjoyable and a blessing to all), and after (to be cleansed of anything negative, and to thank the Lord for the good). We also suggest reading the Family Movie Guide blurb together before starting the movie in order to help prepare your audience for what to expect, as well as to bring out points to ponder while viewing.
Movie reruns
From some comments weve received from YAs and teen/JETT shepherds on the field, it seems that a good number of the problems theyve encountered with teens or JETTs picking up on or imitating the negative attitudes or language in a particular film is when the teens/JETTs had watched that film several times. It is a fact of life that the more young teens or children (or anyone) watch a certain film, the more they memorize the lines and imitate the behavior in the film. Unfortunately, it seems that often the bad behavior is the easiest for people to imitate, even in the best of movies. So wed like to clarify that most movies in the Family Movie Guide are not necessarily recommended to be watched over and over again! The movies in the Family Movie Guide are okay for one-time viewing, but for the most part are not worth watching more than once.
Now thats not to say that you can only watch each movie once and that you have to sit out on video night if youve seen that movie before! What were talking about here is showing a movie repeatedly to your teens or children, or even adults, just because you dont have any other new movies to watch. Weve tried to view as many new movies as possible in order to make these lists as complete as possible, but if youve run out of new movies for you or your teens or children to watch, then you may want to consider some other fun united activity rather than showing a rerun, unless it happens to be a particularly good movie, or one that you feel you or your teens or children would benefit from seeing again.
New age groups for movie ratings
Youll notice that in this Family Movie Guide weve made a new age group division--dividing up "teens" between "junior teens" (14- to 15-yr.-olds), and "senior teens" (16- to 17-yr.-olds). We realize that dividing it up like this may make it inconvenient for Homes to have separate showings for their senior teens and junior teens. But on the other hand, teens mature considerably during these years, and there can be a big difference between the maturity and understanding of a 14-year-old and a 17-year-old. So we felt you would appreciate knowing whether the movie in question is more suitable for older teens or younger teens.
However, as far as movie ratings are concerned, the differentiation between the two groups, or any of the age groups in the Family Movie Guide (as stated in the Fundamental Family Rules, 9.K.), is not a hard and fast rule. Particularly if youre a small Home with only one or two junior teens and one or two senior teens, it might be very difficult and inconvenient for you to arrange a separate showing for the senior teens of movies not rated for junior teens. So if your Home or teen shepherds preview a movie rated for senior teens, and after prayer and counsel they feel that it would be okay for the junior teens in your Home to watch, then its fine to show it to them along with the senior teens.
Re-rated movies marked with [R]
Some of the movies in the Revised Movie Lists are ones that were previously rated, but have now been re-evaluated, while others are new movies. In order to make it easy for you to distinguish between the two, weve marked the ones that were re-rating (those that were on movie lists before the 92 movie fast) with the symbol [R].
Also Christian movies and documentaries, previously published in a separate section in Revised Movie List 4, are now denoted with a (CM) after the movie title.
"Not recommended viewing" list
Youll notice that at the end of this Movie Guide there is a list of movies that are "not recommended viewing." These are movies which the majority of those who previewed them felt they were not worthwhile, or that the bad in the movie outweighed the good. As we explained previously, movies are subjective, and in some cases, some people who saw these movies enjoyed them and thought they were fine. Its also possible that you have seen one of these movies and thought it was okay too. As explained in the Charter, it is not forbidden to watch these movies (or others which do not appear in the Family Movie Guide), but in our opinion, we did not feel these movies were worth watching, as the majority of those who previewed them found them to be either time-wasters, or preaching an ungodly message, or too violent, too much foul language, too depressing or foolish, etc.

AFTER THE PROMISE [R]
Mark Harmon, Diana Scarwid
A very dramatic and emotionally gripping account of a mans long and painful struggle to regain custody of his four sons who were institutionalized by welfare authorities after his wifes death. Based on actual events. Exposes the cruel side of the child welfare services, with good lessons on "guarding our children" and using wisdom when dealing with social service authorities. However, because this movie is extremely heart-wrenching, it is not recommended for parents (or others) who are sensitive to this issue. (1987)
ALIVE!
Ethan Hawke, Vincent Spano
True story of a Uruguayan rugby teams fight for survival when their plane crashes in a remote area of the Andes. This high-intensity movie may not be for some, as the crash and other scenes are quite graphic. The movie touches on a subject which some will find particularly controversial, and which you may want to discuss after the movie. (An interesting footnote is that one of the crash survivors is a friend of the Family in Uruguay.) (1993)
BABE, THE
John Goodman, Kelly McGillis
Realistic portrayal of the legendary but crude hero of baseball, Babe Ruth. Character study of his bad sample and lack of discipline. Movie brings out lessons on the importance of being responsible if you want responsibility. (1992)
BEDROOM WINDOW, THE
Steve Guttenberg, Elizabeth McGovern
Suspense and intrigue result when two lovers witness a murder. The film has good lessons on impulsive actions and "what a tangled web we weave when we practice to deceive" to cover oneself to avoid exposure. (1987)
BLAZE
Paul Newman, Lolita Davidovich
Story based on the life of Earl Long, the flamboyant governor of Louisiana in the 1950s and his relationship with stripper Blaze Star. Insight into political corruption in America. Interesting to see that there are others who are willing to stand up for what they believe and buck the System. (1989)
CRY IN THE DARK, A
Meryl Streep, Sam Neill
True story set in Australia, of the tragic death of a baby girl who was killed by a wild dog, and the ensuing media sensationalism of the Seventh-day Adventist parents plight and consequent court trial. Pro-Christian leaning, it has very pertinent lessons on media persecution and the need to "walk in wisdom toward them that are without." Very intense and heart-wrenching. (1988)
DEAD POETS SOCIETY
Robin Williams
Drama about a charismatic, iconoclastic schoolteachers influence over his students (not always in the right direction) through poetry and his challenging them to "seize the day." Expos of the corruption and stagnation in the education System, and how an idealistic teacher has no chance of changing the status quo. However, it does bring out how his enthusiasm and example of standing up for what he believes both impressed and changed his students. The movie also shows the sadness that can result from a fathers insistence in trying to drive his child to be what he wants him to be. Ending is intense. (1989)
DEAD ZONE
Christopher Walken, Martin Sheen
Intense drama of a man who awakens after a five-year coma and finds he has psychic powers to predict the future. A few gory parts, especially watch out for the bathroom scene. (1983)
DYING YOUNG
Campbell Scott, Julia Roberts
Drama about a rich young man dying of leukemia and an aimless, but fresh and alive young woman who takes the job of being his nurse/companion. Shows the sweetness that is brought out and happiness that can be found in giving love and helping others. This movie also reveals the trauma that chemotherapy patients must endure. Some intense scenes. (1991)
FLATLINERS
Kevin Bacon, Julia Roberts, Kiefer Sutherland
Intense, psychological drama about medical students who experiment with death in order to find out if there is an afterlife. The movie brings up the other side of life after death, and how people are going to have to atone for their sins and make retribution and seek forgiveness of those they have wronged. Although some of their experiences are very traumatic, it illustrates how not all after-death experiences are pleasant. It also shows that people are searching for answers about the afterlife. This movie is not for everyone and had a negative effect on some. So be sure to have good prayer before and after viewing. (1990)
HOWARDS END
Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson
Well-acted, slow-moving British character study of two middle-class English families at the turn of the century, based on a novel by E.M. Forster (author of Room with a View and Passage to India). Some good examples of a wife treating her husband lovingly and meekly, and changing him as a result. (1992)
INDECENT PROPOSAL
Robert Redford, Demi Moore
Drama about a couple who, when faced with severe financial difficulties, decide to take up a billionaires offer of a night with the wife in exchange for a million dollars. Good lessons on the dangers of jealousy. The movie is controversial because of its portrayal of "sharing" outside of marriage as something that is doomed to fail. Its good to bear in mind that this is an attempt to "share" for the wrong reasons by people who dont have the Lords Love and the unselfishness He gives and who are motivated by money. It makes you thankful for the love and grace the Lord has given us in the Family, whereby we can freely love one another and help fill each others physical needs. (1993)
JOY LUCK CLUB, THE
Tamlyn Tomita, Ming-Na Wen
Dramatic and sometimes depressing character study of four Chinese women and their traumatic experiences during the Communist take over in China, and their relationship with their daughters who were born after they fled to the U.S. Has a feminist slant. This movie may not be to everyones liking and sensitive viewers may want to forego it. Those who have a ministry to the Chinese may be interested in this movie, for the insights into the culture and history of the Chinese. (1993)
LITTLE DRUMMER GIRL, THE [R]
Diane Keaton, Klaus Kinski
Spy movie about an Arab sympathizer who is won over and used by Mossad (Israeli secret service). Pro-Jewish propaganda with a sad ending, but an interesting look at how secret services operate. (1984)
LOVE FIELD
Michelle Pfeiffer, Dennis Haysbert
A Dallas housewife who is enthralled by the Kennedys sets off on an unlikely odyssey to try to attend John Kennedys funeral and see Jackie. Interesting drama about prejudices in the South at that time. (1992)
MAN CALLED NORMAN, A (CM)
A man gives his testimony of how the Lord directed him to witness to and shepherd a rather strange and unusual neighbor.
MAN WITHOUT A FACE, THE
Mel Gibson, Nick Stahl
Drama about the relationship between two misfits of society: a young, troubled fatherless boy, and a mysterious recluse with a serious facial disfiguration. Controversial movie, depressing in parts, but with good lessons on trust, mercy and unconditional friendship. Stirring and realistic expos of the hypocrisy and bigotry of the System, and its "child abuse" witchhunt. (1993)
NIGHT OF THE IGUANA (B&W)
Richard Burton, Deborah Kerr, Ava Gardner
Drama about an ex-minister and others who hit rock bottom in their lives while down in Mexico, with character studies on how they were treated by different people. Lessons on finding the good in anothers heart, as well as the danger of adult/teen relationships. Also brings out the value of true friendship. (1964)
OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN, AN [R]
Richard Gere, Debra Winger
Aimless, self-centered young man enlists in Naval Officer Candidate School and learns lessons about humility, life and love. Watch out for foul language and glorification of military training. Not to everyones liking. (1982)
PRETTY WOMAN [R]
Richard Gere, Julia Roberts
Entertaining love story about a cash-strapped girl who resorts to street-walking and meets a handsome millionaire and changes his life. We caution showing this movie to teens because of the unrealistic fantasy-romance and happy-go-lucky portrayal of life as a prostitute. (1990)
REMAINS OF THE DAY, THE
Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson
Slow-moving, very well-acted character study, set in pre-WW2 England, about the relationship between a head housekeeper and a very dedicated butler who is prisoner of his formality and unable to show his emotions. A controversial movie with lots of good points, but should be pow-wowed in order to bring out the right lessons: The butlers dedication to his work is exemplary, but he was sorely lacking in consideration and honesty. Watch out for the subtle message that dedicated people are mindless zombies with no feelings for others, which isnt the case for those motivated by the Lords Love. Caution: The movie is emotionally heart-wrenching for some, and the ending is somewhat sad. (1993)
SCENT OF A WOMAN
Al Pacino, Chris ODonnell
Drama/comedy/character study about a timid student at a college prep school who is in for some big surprises when over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend he is employed to watch a fiery, blind retired army colonel. They learn to get along and end up teaching each other lessons about life and loyalties. Well-acted, entertaining viewing; humorous in parts, intense and emotional in others. This movie is controversial, and some people did not like it because of some negative attitudes by the blind ex-colonel, and the confused and misleading signals the movie sends about what it means to stand up for the truth. (1992)
TOUGH LOVE (CM)
Testimony of a newly-saved Black convict in prison, who has to share his cell with an obnoxious new cell-mate, and how he finds a way to witness to him.
Movies Rated for Senior Teens and Up
8 SECONDS
Luke Perry, Stephen Baldwin
Based on the true story of Lane Frost, one of the most famous rodeo champions of all time. While Lane is not a role model, and we certainly dont agree with risking your life for the thrill of bull-riding, the movie is entertaining and generally wholesome, with good lessons on love and forgiveness in relationships, being kind to others, not letting fame go to your head, and the bad fruit of jealousy. (1994)
BLUE CHIPS
Nick Nolte, Mary McDonnell
Expos of college basketball and the corruption schemes involved in recruiting top players. A very explosive and foul-mouthed coach has to decide between breaking the rules in order to win, or losing the tournament. The coach is a true-to-life representation of how many coaches are, but certainly not a role model. Interesting look at sports behind-the-scenes for our teens. Beware of foul language. (1994)
BODYGUARD, THE
Kevin Costner, Whitney Houston
Suspense/love story about an endangered rock star and the highly disciplined bodyguard she hires to protect her. Lessons on dedication and not getting sidetracked from doing your job right, even if it means having to forgo a personal relationship. Also lessons on security, and how the "rich and famous" often live in constant fear--the price of stardom. This movie is quite worldly in spirit, so needs to be pow-wowed so that teens dont pick up on the somewhat macho attitude of the lead man and the glamour of the leading woman. Entertaining, but not a movie youd want to show teens again and again. (1993)
BRAINSTORM [R]
Christopher Walken, Natalie Wood
Drama/sci-fi about a scientist who invents a device that can record and play back not only pictures and sounds, but sensations and emotions, and what happens when the military gets involved. A bit outdated, but its interesting that what was depicted as "sci-fi" in this movie practically exists today in the form of virtual reality. (1983)
COMING TO AMERICA [R]
Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall
Entertaining comedy about a young African prince who travels to America in search of a wife. Some foul language. (1988)
COOL RUNNINGS
John Candy, Leon
Comedy. Based on a true story of four Jamaicans who decide to compete in the 1988 Winter Olympics as the first bobsled team ever from a tropical country. Entertaining, with lessons on teamwork and fighting against all odds, but some bad and foolish attitudes of the main characters make this unsuitable for young audiences. (1993)
CURLY SUE
James Belushi, Kelly Lynch
Comedy/drama/romance about a hard-driving attorney who takes in a homeless con artist and his adopted orphan girl. Most people found this watchable and entertaining, though it does have some foul language and deception by the main characters. (1991)
DAD [R]
Jack Lemmon, Ted Danson
Touching drama about a jet-set executive who returns home to care for his elderly father while his mother is hospitalized. Good lessons on family relationships, loving and caring, and interesting insight into the lives of old people. A tear-jerker in parts, funny in others. (1989)
DAY AFTER, THE [R]
Jason Robards, Steve Guttenberg
Intense anti-war drama showing the effects of a nuclear war in the U.S. Because this movie is so realistic, it can leave a lasting fearful impression on some, so its not for those who are sensitive to this topic. You may want to follow this up with a positive discussion or Word study of the Lords care for His Own. (1983)
EVERYBODYS ALL-AMERICAN [R]
Dennis Quaid, Jessica Lange
Character study involving a college football star and his beauty queen wife, and the ups and downs they face over a period of 25 years. Good study of the maturing of a relationship, although a bit depressing in parts. Interesting movie to pow-wow. (1988)
FIRM, THE
Tom Cruise, Gene Hackman
Suspense/drama about a Harvard law school grad who is wooed by a high-powered law firm and happily signs on, never suspecting the sinister truth behind its gracious faade. Some violent scenes. Mostly entertainment, although a bit unrealistic in parts. Expos of the deceitfulness of riches and corruption in the business world. (1993)
GERONIMO: AN AMERICAN LEGEND
Gene Hackman, Robert Duvall
Based on the story of Geronimo, the last Apache Indian chief to surrender to the U.S. Army in the late 1800s. American history; clearly shows the White mans cruel oppression of the native Americans (although Geronimo was also cruel). The extensive violence in this movie makes it unsuitable for younger audiences. Good example (by Lt. Good lessons--particularly for fund-raisers--on how going after money instead of the persons heart can corrupt and result in compromise and loss of convictions; shows how the rich are looking for someone who will love them for what they are, not for what they have. However, the movie is tainted throughout by bad examples of lying and deceit, some very obnoxious attitudes, and lots of foul language, which makes it unsuitable for younger audiences. (1994)

However, it is an interesting and realistic insight into tabloid journalism, as well as so-called "teamworking" in the System, which underlines just how miraculous the peace and unity we have in our Homes is. A message on the true values of life, but watch out for the underlying propaganda that the media has a "heart," as this is rarely the case. There is an intense hospital scene (though not gory) that some sensitive viewers may want to skip. (1994)

Touching, well-acted, slow-moving character study of C.S. Lewis, a famous Christian author (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe), and apologist (a person who argues in defense of something, such as a doctrine or policy). An example of an intellectual, carnal-minded Christian whos great on head knowledge, but has lots to learn when it comes to practicing what he preaches. Although some of Lewis theology is definitely off, we can agree with his main point, that suffering can be good and bring out the best in people if taken the right way (see "Blessings from Battles," ML#2632). Unfortunately, the movie incorrectly implies that Lewis lost his faith in God after the hardships he went through, whereas to the contrary, in later writings he testified that it actually deepened his relationship with the Lord. Could lead into an interesting discussion on trials and tests, intellectuality vs. simple believing faith, etc. Needs pow-wowing. (1993)

Very intense--too much so perhaps for some younger teens--but has a good ending. This movie might be suitable for some JETTs, but only if certain points are well pow-wowed, such as the fathers mistreatment of his boys, the kids deceitful ways of begging/busking on the street, their running away from home and disregard for school, the mythological story that runs through the movie, and the spiritualistic ending. A New York City policewoman temporarily lives undercover in Brooklyns community of Hasidic Jews in order to find out who murdered one of them. Lessons on standing up for your convictions and not being conformed to this world and how the meek and obedient Hasidic girl was sweeter and happier than the tough woman cop. This version of the story of Heidi is very different from the Shirley Temple movie, as it more closely follows the original story line in the book. The grandfather is especially portrayed in a much different light, and it should be explained that the grandfather does not represent our Grandpa (as in the Letter "Heidi"). Nevertheless, good lessons on decision-making, bitterness, and how a little bit of love can go a long way towards changing people. Needs pow-wowing. (1993)

Entertaining, well-acted Shakespearean comedy. As with most of Shakespeares plays, the old English style dialogue in this movie may be difficult to understand in parts, and parts will need explaining (or translating--ha!) for JETTs and teens. The first 10 minutes are particularly hard to understand, but hang on, it gets easier. (See comments on Henry V.) The portrayal of sex outside of marriage as an unpardonable sin should be pow-wowed.
